My Classic TV

I’ve learned an important lesson in the past few days… well two actually. The first is not to watch a tv show guaranteed to make me laugh as I’m trying to fall asleep. The second is, if I’m going to stream said tv show during the workday (yes, I like having something to.. listen.. to…) be better about disguising the ensuing laughter. Netflix has opened up their “instant” library to include a lot of what I would call classic shows. In the past few weeks I’ve enjoyed hours of The Cosby Show, Home Improvement, Growing Pains, and Boy Meets World. I forgot just how FUNNY these shows are! Especially some of the older shows, like The Cosby Show, I don’t remember quite as well. (Random tangent- did you know Adam Sandler was in season 4 of The Cosby Show? He plays one of Theo’s high school friends! There are so many cameos by actors and actresses as teenagers and kids in this show it’s crazy. It’s like watching one of those before-they-were-famous programs.) I remember thinking these shows were funny, I remember laughing, but at the ripe old age of 27 I realize just how many jokes I didn’t pick up on. Even all these years later, these shows are still hilarious! And I won’t lie, all these years later the fashions are pretty comical also. Alone in my office, I find myself absolutely cracking up. Granted I’ve only just re-entered the television world in the past month, but I don’t think there are that many tv shows on the air right now that will still be funny in 15 years. I’ve seen How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men, I think they will always be funny. But beyond those two? Not so much. I can’t think of anything on right now that is that good. Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, and Frasier are the only other ones in recent memory, and they have been off the air for years! I may be partial to the 90s tv shows since those were what I grew up with, but I remember every night having something funny on it. I feel like I’m about to channel my grandfather right now, but he’s right, they just don’t make tv shows like they used to!
